Les Brown is someone that shows you anything is possible, regardless of your background.
Literally, anything is possible.
Les was born with his twin brother Wesley, in an abandoned building in a low-income area of Miami Florida 72 years ago.
He and his brother were adopted right after birth, never knowing his parents, and was declared “educable mentally retarded” in grade school.
He believed it for many years, he was constantly known as DT….”the dumb twin.”
This led to low self-esteem and even lower confidence until a teacher in high school told him “someone’s opinion of you does not determine your reality.”
Les used this lesson to change his life dramatically and become the success that he is today.
He has gone on to become an author, a former member of the Ohio House of Representatives, have his own TV show, and is one of the world’s top motivational speaker.
Here are the top 5 lessons you can learn from the world renown motivational speaker to find more success in your life.
You Must Believe in Yourself
I was fortunate enough to see Les Brown speak at a Success Live seminar earlier this year and couldn’t believe how successful he has become.
The biggest takeaway is that you have to believe in yourself if you want to achieve anything great.
It all starts with you. Not your parents, your spouse or your friends.
If you don’t believe you are capable of something amazing you will not create lasting change and greatness in your life.
As Les put it, “Making the first million was easy. Believing I was capable of being someone who could make a million dollars took decades.”
Fail Your Way to Success
People are so scared to fail — “failure’ is one of the reasons I felt like I missed a ton of opportunities because I was scared of looking bad.
Do you have something you want to do in your life but think you might fail so you just don’t do it?
As Les pointed out in his speech, the average millionaire goes bankrupt at least 3.5 times.
That is crazy!
This statistic shows that failure is just part of the process for success.
The only real failure is when you quit entirely when you have something left in the tank.
As long as you learn from each “failure” it’s not really failing. Keep learning, keep growing and you will eventually fail your way to success.
Audit Your Circle of Friends
As Les said, “You gotta get the losers out of your life.”
This is a common trait among successful people — they surround themselves with winning people. If you have negative, pessimistic people as your friends it will be really hard to achieve your goals.
Don’t waste another moment with someone who is dragging you down.
If you have to lose some friends or need to distance yourself, do it. I’ve done this over the years and while sometimes it’s hard, often times it’s necessary.
A great exercise is to write down the 20 people you spend the most time with. Mark a (+) or (-) next to each of them.
Start spending more time with the positive people and phasing out the ones that are negative. If you’re struggling to do this with a negative friend have an open, honest conversation with them. Let them know you’re working on hanging with positive, uplifting people and see how they react.
Gotta be Hungry
Anyone can create goals, but you must have discipline and a great work ethic to make them happen.
As Les says, “You gotta be hungry.”
I love this — too many people in today’s world quit when things get hard.
If you want to change anything you must be persistent and take massive action.
Sometimes you will have to get up early, stay late, workout longer, or eat less to achieve your goals.
Teach yourself to be disciplined so you can be successful in anything you want to change in your life.
Don’t End Up With Regret
Les had a powerful quote I’ve heard in several videos, “If you died today, what ideas, what dreams, what books, what gifts will die with you?”
This is a very powerful way to motivate you to stop “waiting until Monday” to start something new.
For me, it would be a lot of unwritten books, speeches I’ve never given, and people I haven’t helped.
Of course, this will be different for everyone but the important thing to remember is to quit procrastinating.
If you want to change your life start it now, no need to wait until next week or next year.

Les is a true inspiration and someone who has helped millions of people by sharing his incredible story with others.
He’s found his passion and works every day to help to impact more people.
That is the ultimate definition of success in my world.
If you get a chance I highly recommend attending a live event so you can hear some of these epic quotes in person:
- “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
- “Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears.”
- “When life knocks you down, try to land on your back. Because if you can look up, you can get up. Let your reason get you back up.”
- “Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.”
- “Life has no limitations, except the ones you make.”
- “You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change.”
